GG ESWAT
February 1993 : Graphics and Music - sunteam_paul and sunteam_ian : Program - sunteam_paul
The exact timing of our obsession with making things look like they were being played on a Sega Game Gear is difficult to pin down. But I think it can be safely said that it began with the decision to shrink down Alien Storm after considerable difficulties with speed. The whole Game Gear thing became rather appealing and GG Eswat is one of the resultant babies. Eswat was a pretty cool game in the arcades and so, with footage taken with a video camera of most of the game, we set about it. It's not easy working from incomplete video camera footage and a few screenshots, but that never put us off trying. It became quite clear that I was going to have to program the damn game, so we settled for the most minimal approach to gameplay as possible. It's not much of a game really, more of a graphics demo with some very bad music, although some of the bosses require a bit of learning to defeat. For anyone who downloads the ADF file to play, there is a cheat that forces the game to load the boss up, skipping the level and removing some of the boss attacks. While playing, just push * (star). Sometimes this works as it should, other times it will continue to skip all levels automatically, which is a bit of a pain. Make sure your joystick is plugged in before playing, there is no keyboard option to be found here.

This screen shows our often successful method of first drawing the sprite roughly at several times the intended size, then scaling it down and adding details. It's surprising how well it worked. |

A shot from the ending sequence. I believe this was copied from a screenshot of Sega's Moonwalker. |

Ouch. This ghastly image was probably our first messaround that led to making the full game. It's quite horrible, and you can even see the Akira logo that it was drawn on top of. |
